The alternative is people completely losing access to their data. I can't fault Microsoft for escrowing the keys by default (hell that's probably why they disabled local accounts) and let's be realistic here maybe a half-dozen people have their keys turned over due to a subpoena or court order. Like I said, for those that ARE privacy conscious there is a way to not have your keys escrowed with them. Or I guess you can use Linux & Luks and pray to god you don't lose your keys there.

@gme@bofh.social I mean, ive been using Linux exclusively since the mid 1990s. The last Windows I bought was NT in 1997. so all of this was news to me and given the number of likes and retoots I'm guessing it was news to thousands on the fedi as well. so I guess my post did its job.
