I sure wish I could remember the exact shape of what I added to the Vega between the neck and the fretboard. . All I remember for sure is a lot of painful trial and error. I was shaping the under bit, gluing the fretboard on and stringing it up to see what the final shape was, unstringing it again, stripping the top fretboard off again and then adjusting the shape. I was simply doing, over and over, I didn’t have much of a theory. . I would like to shorten that process, so I’m theorizing and trying to remember. . I know the fretboard was thicker on the body, above the 14th. fret, and it needed a high saddle. I don’t think that’s completely avoidable, but I think I could raise that part a bit less. . That part looks flat, unaffected by end of life, I mean of coarse, there’s no neck there at all, so it doesn’t want the convex curve there, my arc has to end before that, but how do I transition my convex piece to straight? I think all I can do is centre my under piece thickest in the middle of the neck, like 6th. fret, and have a more abrupt curve over those first six (done this morning, with nothing off at the 6th., probably that’s too thick, too much curve overall, and I’ll be taking it down) and a longer curve from there to the sound hole. . I don’t feel that’s really right, but that’s going to be my starting point. . As to theory, partly the partial second fretboard simply fills the space created between the fretboard and the strings by end of life stress, but also, the extra layer of rosewood is strong, and resists that stress going forward. . There are issues, the neck gets thicker, I am forever tempted to remove wood from the back of the neck to compensate, but I fear that I took too much off the back of the Vega’s neck, got too close to the truss rod. I suppose I’ll never know if the Vega breaks. It will be a pity, it’s basically a Martin D-18. Sounded fantastic. . And this 12 string’s neck is wide, but it’s thin and flat, there is no wood to take off the back there, but I guess that’s the same as saying it’s thin enough already and I won’t need to. . /21 #Guitar #Framus12StringProject
