i'm generally of the mind that programmers are too quick to throw away old things that work to replace them with worse things that take decades to reach approximate feature parity.
in theory another group could maintain the old thing (and indeed, some try), but that runs into another problem which is that projects can grow to the point where they cannot be reasonably maintained by a few individuals without institutional support.

@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place i think a big issue here is that "works" is relative i didn't think C "works" since i was a minor. i still don't. but lots would disagree
