idea: google fcm but not google and not firebase and as a thing for linux apps to use so they can reliably give users notifications and data updates without always running no idea how to do it without some kind of control hub that developers subscribe to and use, cuz the idea is that you replace every app's own little service on-device with just one that'll fetch everything for the other apps. maybe a federated approach but when the goal is "reliably provide notifications" i feel like federation is kinda not the best thing here. instances come up and down and if the instance your system uses disappears you dont get notifications anymore. i wouldn't say "just use nfty/pushbullet/somethingelse" about this either because the idea is a unified service that ideally as many user-facing linux apps as possible utilize. I dont think any apps i use consistently use any of those. and i think the pitch is somewhat sound, if a bit of a stretch in viability, you'd have to convince not only applications to use this new theoretical service for getting data/notifications, but you'd have to convince distro maintainers to package and provide it out of the box for the best effect. you'd probably want to convince the maintainers of the KDE and GNOME desktops to integrate their own implementations into their stack, with XDG portals. it'd be an enormous effort with the grand total effect of... slightly better battery life on a niche within a niche of users? i guess laptop users would benefit if apps like signal and discord stopped running in the background and opted for this system to get notifications from their servers to users. i guess. this whole idea stems from me being kinda annoyed when i see sum bs like "6 background apps" in my gnome quick settings knowing full well that on a platform like my android phone its like 2 and its because they do things FCM doesn't provide.
