If I wake up at 5am I'm so tired that I don't accomplish anything the whole day. And I'd rather be most alert after work when I can do something interesting with my time.

If I woke up at 5am, I'd have to go to bed at like 8pm to get a full night's sleep. I went to a friend's party yesterday that didn't even start until 800pm. Getting up that early on the regular would mean a death blow to social life, or you'd be exhausted all the time from staying up into normal evening hours.

I find that I can either start or end the day good. When I get up early, I have a good first half of the day and then start fading. When I wake up late, I get a rough start but a strong finish.

The key to a good day is to start the day good

Yeah, I've always been a morning person, so when I add something to my routine, I often just start waking up earlier to do it. At this point I'm waking up around 5, and it's crazy how much stuff I can get done just by auto-piloting while still groggy from waking up. My wife isn't a morning person at all, but she's started getting up with me too, and she begrudgingly admits that it's pretty nice to have stuff done before going to work, rather than tacking them on afterward.

Sure, by the time the day starts, you've had time to wake up, unlike the others. It's great as long as you have a cosy place for your nap.
