@kathrynhello@adlsolarpunk.net thank u for ur recommendations. Funnily (not funny) enough, I watched Dead Poets Society on Friday evening! Still turning it over in my head. The bit where Robin Williams tells Neil "you're acting in the role of being a dutiful son" or whatever made me go "huh there is a potential trans reading here" which continued to stay in my head as the rest of the events of the film played out :( The racist appropriation/imitation of black and indigenous cultures as a pathway to creative freedom, while not inaccurate to how I imagine those boys might behave in real life, did not make me sympathetic to them. Neither did the romance subplot - kissing a sleeping girl and following her around at her school did not win me over either. I guess ultimately they are depicting a particular place at a particular time (high-class boarding school in the US in the...70s?) which is not known for instilling white boys with respect for women or other cultures. But fuck do they nail the feeling of being trapped within parental and societal expectations with limited ways out :( Children's rights when?? Ok I didn't realise I had to get that all out lol. The rest of ur recs I haven't seen, they look awesome yay movies!!!
