1/2 Noted mathematician Terrence Tao has coordinated a great open letter about AI and society. The technology in use now will never become sentient. How it is used and who owns it are the actual issues to consider. Humans have not achieved anything close to alignment among ourselves, and that is the real issue rather than imaginary scenarios about computers. The things to think about are the impacts on jobs, income distribution, and education/workforce development https://terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/11/a-severe-misalignment-of-ai-in-mathematics/

  • 2/2 I should add that this is not to say that people doing alignment research and coding is not important. It is. But you are not going to "solve alignment" because no one could ever come up with a set of algorithms that would make an LLM agent never turn into a digital monkey's paw. These things do not have full intentions or understanding, which means that you cannot devise something that will prevent them from going haywire. It is a demand to hard-code reality itself.
