This is going to be the hill I die on: a small number of social media followers is better than a large number of social media followers. This is especially true if your small number of followers know you or have met up with you in real life.
This has been my experience over the last few decades of my life. I feel that social media is just better if it's small-scale rather than big. When your community becomes too big, you hardly know them, and they probably don't even have much of a connection with you. How do you know a million people anyway? But it is much easier to know at least 50 people in a following of 100.

@liztai@hachyderm.io There’s a lot of truth in this, but don’t dismiss the flipside, the people who get to “know” you. They may not really know you, of course, but they hear your voice and it makes a difference in their lives. I don’t know @stux@mstdn.social , or @gwynnion@mastodon.social , or @Rachelburch@mastodon.social but I’m certainly glad to have met them (and many others) here
