Almost everything I know about D&D and Tolkien, I learned from Nethack. For example, I know that a Mumak is much more dangerous than a Rothe even though they're both a gray q.

One thing I learned from Nethack is that the conical wizard hat with the stars and moons is called a "cornuthaum." Back in the 00s, when it was cool to be a pedant, if you told me you put on your robe and wizard hat I would've been like "it's called a cornuthaum, fool. Do you want to be ignorant all your life?" What I didn't realize until much later is that "cornuthaum" was some shit the Nethack devs made up. Nobody else calls it that.
