Rufo is one of the stars of the new-right intellectual scene. His rise was fueled by conspiracy theories about leftist radicals supposedly dominating all the institutions of American life. No one has been more successful at laundering rightwing extremism and making it palatable for polite society.

We have seen this dynamic play out so many times since the formation of Modern Conservatism in the 1950s: Every new generation of rightwing intellectuals wants to believe they can harness and control the extremist, conspiratorial energies for their own purposes. It never works.
