IEEE 1541 was a mistake.
We chose to appease marketers, rather than resist redefinition of perfectly reasonable units, just because the general public can be successfully confused by them.
This post brought to you by the fact that someone has apparently redefined the Megabit since I studied the things.

Like, seriously, if you’re going to do that, why not go all the way and redefine the byte as a decabit? How is this saner?
