Here is the Hansard record of the debate about bringing the water industry back into public ownership
"Private companies have paid out, in 2024 prices, around £83 billion—an average of £2.4 billion a year—as dividends, while loading the companies in debt. Often, those loans were taken out simply to increase the amount of cash extracted as dividends when profits alone were not enough. As we know, crucial infrastructure has been left to fail. Not a single new reservoir has been built since 1992, and water companies have overseen the waste of around 3 billion litres of water a day through leaky pipes"
The government response !!
"I will not pretend that there is one simple answer to the problems facing the sector, but what is not in question is the need for significant reform. That means tougher regulation, which we have started to see through the increased inspections by the Environment Agency"

@Geri@veganism.social Increased inspectiond? Like the focus on the 'most disabled' this is a meaningless promise. They did so few inspections, and just one extra would be an increase. Too few staff and the penalties just come out of our pockets.
