This week's jukebox music theme, Personal Playlist, looks back at the music that marked our lives.
I used to discover new albums I liked by borrowing them from the library. If I liked one well enough to spend money on it, I'd buy my own. Judy Collins' "Bread and Roses" album was one that I played over until it was scratched and worn. It spoke to me when I was in my 20's.
Here is the title song from that album, a stirring anthem of working women.
".As we go marching, marching,
In the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens,
A thousand mill lofts grey,
Are touched with all the radiance
That a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing
Bread and roses, bread and roses..
...No more the drudge and idler,
Ten that toil where one reposes,
But the sharing of life's glories,
Bread and roses, bread and roses.
...Our lives shall not be sweated
From birth until life closes
Hearts starve as well as bodies
Bread and roses, bread and roses."
