As far as I know, it’s because American eggs are required to be washed and sterilized whereas European eggs are the exact opposite, they are left unwashed. Both are perfectly fine, you just need to know to wash them before eating them in Europe.

That and they don’t bother to vaccinate chickens so eggs can’t be eaten raw.

Washing breaks the natural anti-bacterial barrier of eggs, leaving them prone to salmonella, and they have to be refrigerated to avoid contamination. I have no idea why they do this.

You don’t need to wash European eggs before eating them. Unless you’re planning to eat the shell.
