one thing i hate about the german language is the thing with the word for friend: freund_in.
it's also the word for (romantic) partner (like boyfriend/girlfriend in english). but unlike in english, "freund"/"freundin" doesn't come with a prefix to denote you're referring to your partner.
this leads german speakers to do weird word acrobatics to introduce someone as their friend, because "das ist mein freund" can be understood as "this is my boyfriend"!
"das ist ein guter freund" ("this is a good friend")"das ist ein freund von mir" ("this is a friend of mine")"das ist meine beste freundin" ("this is my best friend")carefully removing the possessive pronoun "mein" ("my") and replacing it with a way less personal "ein" ("a"). idk, this just sucks
