Back when you could write your own savefile names i‘d cadge together some shorthand for the filename to help: sdqstswordgetthing.sav or some such. “Side quest to get sword get the [item] next on teh list.”

A lot of games still have that option. I mostly see it for VNs, which is really useful if you’re going for certain routes.
