uBlock blocks ads. It does not make visible what isn't transferred.

Actually, it does more than just block ads. Most pages which are behind a paywall can still be accessed if you disable Javascript. Disabling Javascript is one of uBlock's features. Obviously, some administrators have found ways to block content behind a paywall without just using Javascript. Archived articles are awkward to read on mobile, so I don't usually use that unless I really, really want to read something.
