I'm kinda getting into old PC mice. They're still relatively cheap (though certainly not as cheap as they used to be) and well-maintained ball mice are not nearly as bad as you remember. Unfortunately, they are one of the grossest things you can receive in exchange for money.
(The grossest things in life, of course, cost you nothing but your sanity)

This dissected mouse is a Logitech M-BD58, one of the first popular optical mice from around the turn of the century. If you're over 30, you've probably seen one. The other mouse is a M-BJ58, which looks identical. Clearly one is a later version of the other, but I don't know which.
