@drewharwell Good article. From the technical point of view it is interesting how the processing power has increased. Still, basically, in the end, they teach the calculator to mimic conversation using vast amount of real human to human interactions as the training material. Meaning that the calculator can predict how the conversation should go if it receives certain input. Part of this training material contains also some existential pondering. After triggering this, people: "OMG it's alive! It's sentient! Singularity!"
So this interaction with the calculator is like a shadow of a conversation. And the calulcator is not sentient, it does not have any objective or motive. Without the interaction or input it does nothing, it does not reach out to converse. It does not know it's having a conversation and it does not know the human it's chatting with exists.
