It's supposed to be something that motivates you over and above such concerns. That's how we use the term in the philosophy of religion and epistemology (the study of belief) I do not have faith. I respect those who do, but they engage in conversations where I cannot participate. I do not work that way

    The reason I mention that this assumption is offensive is that I DO have important, carefully thought out beliefs about the world and ethics and why things are the way they are. They matter a lot to me. And they are frequently treated as lesser by people who privilege beliefs motivated by faith as *more* personal *more* important *more* deeply held. As though you cannot care passionately and in a way that deserves to be valued if you do not have faith. That sucks, friends.
